The Easter bank holidays 2027 are Good Friday on Friday 26 March and Easter Monday on Monday 29 March. Good Friday is a bank holiday in every UK region. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but not in Scotland.
Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?
No. Scotland has Good Friday but not Easter Monday as a bank holiday. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 lists Easter Monday for England and Wales and for Northern Ireland, and Good Friday for Scotland. That makes Easter a four-day weekend in most of the UK and a three-day weekend in Scotland.

Why does Easter move every year?
Easter Sunday is set by the church calendar, not by a fixed date. In the Western churches it is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, using the church’s own tables for the moon. That puts Easter Sunday between 22 March and 25 April. Good Friday is always two days before, Easter Monday the day after, so both bank holidays move with it.
2027 is an early year: Easter Sunday is on 28 March, so both bank holidays fall in March and there is no bank holiday in April 2027. In 2028 Easter is back in April, with Good Friday on 14 April and Easter Monday on 17 April.

How to turn Easter into a 16-day break
Because Good Friday and Easter Monday sit either side of a weekend, Easter gives the best return on annual leave in the year. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, booking the 8 working days around Easter 2027 (22 to 25 March and 30 March to 2 April) gives 16 days off in a row, from Saturday 20 March to Sunday 4 April. In Scotland, with no Easter Monday, the same break needs 9 days of leave. The leave planner on the 2027 page shows every bank holiday of the year this way.
Frequently asked questions
Is Easter Sunday a bank holiday?
No. Easter Sunday is always a Sunday, so it is not a bank holiday and there is no substitute day for it. The Easter bank holidays are Good Friday and, outside Scotland, Easter Monday.
Are the Easter bank holidays the same as the school Easter holidays?
No. The bank holidays are two days set by law. School Easter holidays are set locally, by the council or the school, so check your own term dates.
