The next bank holiday is not always the same across the UK. Scotland and Northern Ireland have days that England and Wales do not, so pick your region above. The date, countdown and following holidays all switch with it.

The next long weekends

A long weekend here means three or more days off in a row from weekends and bank holidays alone, without using annual leave. The list follows the region you selected above.

Is the next bank holiday the same in Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Often, but not always. Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and the two May bank holidays are shared by all three jurisdictions. In late November Scotland’s next bank holiday is usually St Andrew’s Day on 30 November, while England, Wales and Northern Ireland wait until Christmas. In spring Northern Ireland has St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, and in summer the Battle of the Boyne holiday around 12 July. Scotland’s summer bank holiday comes at the start of August, the rest of the UK’s at the end.

How we calculate

The dates come from the GOV.UK bank holidays data, which we import every night and check against the published lists. “Today” is calculated in UK time (Europe/London), so the answer changes at midnight in the UK, not in your own time zone. The countdown counts calendar days from today to the bank holiday. A substitute day is shown when a holiday falls at a weekend and the bank holiday moves to a weekday. Years that GOV.UK has not yet published are calculated from the usual rules and marked provisional.
