- St Andrew’s Day · ScotlandMonday 30 November 2026
The St Andrew’s Day bank holiday is on Monday 30 November 2026 and applies in Scotland only. England, Wales and Northern Ireland have no bank holiday that day; their next one is Christmas Day.
Do you get St Andrew’s Day off work?
Not automatically. St Andrew’s Day became a bank holiday under the St Andrew’s Day Bank Holiday (Scotland) Act 2007, but a bank holiday does not create a right to a day off. GOV.UK states that employers do not have to give paid leave on bank or public holidays, so your contract decides. The Scottish Government made the same point when it confirmed the 2026 World Cup bank holiday: employer policy on bank holidays is set out in contracts of employment.

What happens when 30 November falls on a weekend?
The bank holiday moves to the following Monday. The 2007 Act added St Andrew’s Day to Schedule 1 of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 with the rule “30th November, if it is not a Saturday or Sunday or, if it is a Saturday or Sunday, the first Monday following that day”. That happened in 2024 (Monday 2 December) and 2025 (Monday 1 December) and will happen again in 2030 and 2031.

In 2027 St Andrew’s Day is on Tuesday 30 November, so it will not create a long weekend unless you book the Monday.
Who was St Andrew?
St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and 30 November is his feast day. The saltire, the white diagonal cross on a blue field, is traditionally linked to the story that he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. How the day is marked is a matter of custom; the bank holiday law only fixes the date.
Frequently asked questions
Is St Andrew’s Day a bank holiday in England?
No. St Andrew’s Day is a bank holiday in Scotland only. England’s patron saint day, St George’s Day on 23 April, is not a bank holiday either.
Are banks closed on St Andrew’s Day?
Not necessarily. A bank holiday does not legally require banks or other businesses to close, a point the Scottish Government repeated for the 2026 World Cup bank holiday. Check your bank’s branch finder for opening hours on the day.
